The World's First Bodybuilders Were Ancient Greeks

1

In August 2004, the world's greatest athletes will descend on Athens to compete in the Games of the XXVIII Olympiad. In doing sο, they will serve as the latest link in a human chain that extends back more than 2.000 years , when the ancient Greeks became the first culture in recorded human history to elevate the body to an art form. Deriving their precise proportions as much from mathematics as from anatomy, the Greeks sought for the human body an idealized, optimal harmony between size and aesthetics. Although this body ideal infused much of Greek art, only the larger-than-life marble and bronze statues of sculptors like Pheidias and Lysippos truly convey the epic scale of that vision.

That the Greek physique archetype remains humanity's archetype as well is evidenced by the torso on display on the rounds of the Olympique Museum in Lausanne, Switzerland, home of the Iternational Olympic Committee. Were that statue to become animated today, millennia after having been cast, he would no longer be larger than life; in fact he could stride onstage and participate instantly in the sport of Bodybuilding.
